FED: Greens call on govt to not drop child care investment

The Greens are calling for the federal government to invest in existing childcare centres
after it dumped plans to provide hundreds more centres.

Childcare Minister KATE ELLIS yesterday announced the government would proceed with
only 38 of 260 childcare centres promised in 2007.

The decision was based on new data that showed 30 per cent of long day care places
were vacant across the country every day in the week ending on March 19 this year.

South Australian Greens Senator SARAH HANSON-YOUNG says the cut means child care will
fall off the government's agenda.

She says if this isn't about budget savings for the budget blowout then the government
should commit the money to existing services.
